Adapting Disaster Education Materials to Suit Different Age Groups
Education about disasters needs to be tailored to the educational level and emotional and cognitive development of each age group. This aims to deliver a more meaningful message and have an effective impact. The following are some general guidelines on age-appropriate material delivery:
- For Children Aged 3-6 Years Old
At this age, children’s thinking is still tentative, but they absorb information quickly. Learning should be fun. Materials that can be used include engaging visual media such as videos and picture books. Educational games and simulation exercises can also be incorporated into play.
- Elementary School Age 7-12 Years Old
At this age, children already have a more logical concept. The material must be presented in more detail and comprehensively, along with more concrete causes. Encourage children to be more active by teaching them the common signs of an impending disaster and how to respond to it.
- Ages 13 and above
Teenagers are considered to have more complex thinking. In delivering this material, there should be a more in-depth discussion of risk analysis, emergency disaster response, and leadership approaches in the event of a disaster. Involve the wider community to support learning.
