The Education Controversy Surrounding the Cases of Ms. Salsa and Novi Sukatani – Recently, the world of education has been in an uproar.
Two cases involving teachers have become public controversies: the cases of Ms. Salsa and Novi Sukatani. How should we understand this controversy?

A Brief Overview of the Issues Facing Ms. Novi and Salsa
Novi Citra Indriyati, better known as Bu Novi, is a teacher at SDIT Mutiara Hati, Banjarnegara. In addition to her profession as an educator, she also works as the vocalist of the punk band Sukatani under the stage name “Twister Angel.”
The band gained viral attention after their song titled “Bayar Bayar Bayar” led to legal issues for its members. The song was alleged to insult the police institution, prompting Sukatani to release an apology video.
On the other hand, Salsabila Rahma, or Ms. Salsa, is a contract teacher in Jember whose nude video was circulated on social media.
She stated that the video was made at her boyfriend’s request but was later shared without her permission. The Jember Teachers’ Association defended Ms. Salsa, stating that she was a victim of digital exploitation. Currently, Ms. Salsa remains employed as a teacher and has passed the PPPK selection process.
How to Respond to the Case of Teacher Salsa and Novi Sukatani?
It is not easy to respond to the controversy surrounding Ms. Salsa and Ms. Novi. Many netizens believe that Ms. Salsa is no longer fit to be a teacher. Meanwhile, Ms. Novi should be able to maintain her profession as an educator.
Although recording herself without clothes is unacceptable, Ms. Salsa is essentially a victim of cybercrime committed by her boyfriend. Crimes like this are rampant in the digital world and often involve conflicts between couples who have broken up.
On the other hand, Ms. Novi was only expressing her criticism of the police institution. Her case received more solid support from the public because what Ms. Novi did did not violate the code of ethics of a teacher in a formal educational institution.
Ironically, these two female teachers received very different treatment. Mrs. Salsa, despite facing public criticism, is still able to work as a civil servant under the PPPK program. She is also still active on social media.
As for Mrs. Novi, she was dismissed from her position as a teacher. Although she was later offered a job by the Regent of Purbalingga, she seems to be struggling to speak out and maintain a presence on various platforms.
The Need for Clear and Fair Rule of Law
The difference in treatment between Ms. Salsa and Ms. Novi has clearly sparked public outrage. Many are wondering why Ms. Salsa is still able to work while Ms. Novi is not. This sentiment is understandable. Ideally, all schools in Indonesia should adhere to the same consistent ethical standards.
Schools cannot apply subjective and arbitrary rules regarding which teachers deserve to be dismissed and which do not.
In this situation, the role of the Ministry of Education and Culture is very much needed. They must be able to formulate clear rules regarding the dismissal of teachers so that there are no unilateral actions that harm the rights of teachers as workers.
Apart from the issue of inconsistency, this situation also shows that Indonesia still has a lot of work to do regarding the issue of the rule of law. Especially in the case of Ms. Novi. Because she only got justice after her apology video went viral.
How to Answer Children’s Questions about This Case?
Seeing that both of them work in the field of education, the case of Ms. Salsa and Novi will definitely be exposed to their children. The problem is, what if the children ask about this issue?
Although it is very sensitive, it is better for parents to respond to their children’s critical questions. Don’t tell your children to be quiet just because they are not yet adults.
Because with the prevalence of digital news in this era, children will inevitably be exposed to this issue without their parents having to tell them themselves.
Just use simple language to explain this issue to your children. For example, you can say that Ms. Novi’s case is a case of democracy not being upheld.
In fact, in a democracy, everyone is allowed to criticize as long as it is within clear boundaries.
Meanwhile, Ms. Salsa’s case is an example of digital crime that children should be aware of. Do not let your children record themselves without clothes or spread other people’s indecent content on the internet.
Try to remain wise in expressing your opinions. Do not let your children develop extreme views, because they may not fully understand the complexity and sensitivity of this issue.
So, in conclusion
The cases of Ms. Novi and Ms. Salsa demonstrate inconsistency in the enforcement of rules in the world of education. Schools seem to be able to arbitrarily decide which teachers can be fired and which cannot.
The difference in treatment between the two reveals a double standard in assessing the ethics and professionalism of teachers, which can confuse the public and damage the image of education. Therefore, a comprehensive evaluation of ethical policies and legal protection for educators is necessary.
