1. Poor School Quality
Some early childhood education centers in Indonesia are indeed of high quality and even meet international standards. Unfortunately, most early childhood education centers are in deplorable condition.
Often, these centers are housed in community buildings or abandoned structures. The available facilities are also very limited, which hinders the learning experience.
The solution? One of them is funding.
Anna Christin, a teacher at the Merah Putih Early Childhood Education Center in Surakarta, told Radar Solo that early childhood education students cannot learn through imagination alone. They need better facilities, which require significant funding.
2. The Policy Is Not Yet Comprehensive
The challenges facing early childhood education in Indonesia can also be viewed from a legal perspective. Compared to other educational institutions, this sector does not yet have a truly comprehensive regulatory framework.
This situation should be a priority for the government, particularly members of the House of Representatives. Without clear legislation, efforts to improve the quality of early childhood education will not proceed smoothly.
3. Inadequate Teacher Quality and Welfare
It is no secret that early childhood education (PAUD) teachers’ salaries are extremely low. Netti Herawati, Chairperson of the Central Executive Board of the Association of Early Childhood Educators and Support Staff, even stated that 72% of PAUD teachers who are members of the organization earn less than 250,000 rupiah.
The government must address this issue immediately. After all, it is the state that has the authority to regulate teacher salaries—an issue that has dragged on year after year.
4. Limited Student Participation
Compared to other countries, enrollment in early childhood education (PAUD) in Indonesia remains very low. These issues in early childhood education are generally caused by a lack of awareness among parents and the perception that early childhood education is not important.
To address this, the government must take a proactive approach to raising public awareness so that parents do not neglect to enroll their children in early childhood education.
5. Disparities in Early Childhood Education in Java and Outside Java
Finally, one of the causes of early childhood education issues in Indonesia is the disparity in the number and quality of preschool institutions between Java and areas outside Java. In remote regions such as the border areas of Papua, early childhood education schools are virtually nonexistent.
Addressing this issue will undoubtedly require very serious measures. This is because establishing early childhood education schools requires not only substantial funding but also intensive and concrete planning.
