Intergenerational conflict is one of the classic conflicts throughout the history of human civilization. Although it doesn’t manifest in bloody wars, older and younger generations almost always criticize one another.
Gen Alpha, as the youngest generation, is often the target of criticism from older generations like Millennials and Boomers. In fact, it’s not uncommon for Gen Z to also complain about this generation, accusing them of rude behavior.
Is It True That Gen Alpha Is Rude?
The term “Generation Alpha” essentially refers to those born between 2010 and 2025. This generation, therefore, consists of children ranging from toddlers to 15-year-old teenagers.
The perception that Generation Alpha is less polite is, unfortunately, somewhat accurate. Lauren Brown West-Rosenthal, a writer for Parents.com, notes that her own child—a member of Generation Alpha—has a tougher disposition than she does.
In his view, they wouldn’t be afraid to challenge a status quo they consider wrong. As for him, he only dares to criticize his own parents.
Why Is Generation Alpha Rude?
The Alpha Generation’s somewhat impolite behavior actually isn’t without reason. According to psychologist Catherine Nobile, this behavior stems from significant social changes.
Unlike previous generations, the Alpha Generation has been exposed to major issues from a young age.
Thanks to digital technology, they are exposed to shocking conflicts such as the Israel-Palestine war, the Russia-Ukraine war, and so on. They can also quickly read analyses of critical issues unfolding in other countries.
They even catch wind of gossip about foreign celebrities like P. Diddy very quickly. It’s not unlikely that they then form their own opinions in response to these matters.
It is this very situation that makes the Alpha generation highly critical. They refuse to accept explanations from others simply because those people are older. They will only accept opinions that they deem reasonable.
A Major Challenge for Parents and Teachers
A critical mindset, a willingness to voice differing opinions, and awareness of various global issues are some of the key characteristics of Generation Alpha.
These traits can sometimes lead to the perception that Generation Alpha is rude. However, this is not entirely accurate.
Parents and teachers certainly need to understand this thoroughly. Don’t let a student or child from the Alpha Generation who disagrees with their parents be labeled as “disrespectful” just because of that.
Growing up with high digital exposure, where everyone is free to express their opinions, naturally makes this generation highly critical.
Instead of just getting angry, here are some approaches parents and teachers can adopt when dealing with the Alpha Generation:
- Teach them how to form opinions more wisely while remaining critical.
- Encourage them not to blindly believe everything they find online.
- Teach them how to express disagreement politely.
Different Generations, Different Situations!
Simply complaining that Generation Alpha is rude won’t solve the problem at hand. Although this generation exhibits certain traits that are often perceived as rude, there are specific reasons why they behave this way.
One of them, as mentioned earlier, is their significant exposure to the digital world. As a result, from a young age, they have grown accustomed to reading about global issues and freely expressing their views online.
